Shane Smith joined the Cisco College staff as Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach on June 1, 2023. In March 2024, he took on the Co-Offensive Coordinator role, and added the Assistant Head Coach title. Smith will enter his third season on the Hill in the fall of 2025. His coaching journey has spanned across multiple levels and states.
In 2024, Smith oversaw an offensive unit that improved from 282.3 yards per game in 2023 to 300.7. Two of his offensive linemen, Kenneth Smith and James Bess, received All-SWJCFC honors. Kenneth Smith (OT) went on to sign with Austin Peay University (FCS). Three others signed scholarships as well.
In 2023, Smith's first season with the Wranglers was highlighted by Brandon Jones' (OT) Second-Team All-SWJCFC selection. Jones went on to sign with the University of Texas-Permian Basin (DII).
Smith began his coaching career in 2017, when he became a defensive graduate assistant at Eastern New Mexico University (DII) in Portales, New Mexico. Charlie Rizzio, the Wranglers' current head coach, was the defensive line coach at ENMU. This began the two's relationship.
In 2018, Smith moved on to Bemidji State University (DII) in Bemidji, Minnesota. Smith spent one season as the Beaver's defensive line coach.
Smith then accepted a defensive graduate assistant position with the Univeristy of Texas-El Paso (FBS), where he worked with the linebackers during the fall of 2019. He then moved into the role of assistant defensive line coach in the spring of 2020.
After three years at the collegiate level, Smith decided to join the Texas high school coaching ranks. From 2020-21, Smith served as the defensive line coach at Garland Sachse High School. In 2022, he was the defensive line coach at Galena Park North Shore High School. While working at North Shore, Smith competed in the 2022 6A Division One UIL State Championship game, with the Mustangs falling to the Duncanville Panthers on December 17, 2022.
Smith is no stranger to big-time football. He played defensive tackle at the University of Kansas from 2009-13 for some of college football's most recognizable names: Mark Mangino, Turner Gill, and Charlie Weiss. Smith was named First-Team All-Big 12 Academic three times while on the gridiron for the Jayhawks.
Smith is originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico. He graduated from Kansas University with a Bachelor's in Secondary Education in 2014. Smith also holds a Master's in Leadership Studies from the University of Texas-El Paso. He and his wife, Maggie, and their daughter, Magnolia, reside in Cisco.
